It doesn’t matter why you’re getting divorced: it’s going to be stressful whatever the circumstances, even if you know that it’s for the best. Studies have shown that divorce is the second most stressful life event after the death of a loved one. Divorce might make sense, but it still involves an upheaval of your life — and that’s going to take a toll.

Because of the mental and emotional impact of divorce, it’s important that anyone going through it themselves takes steps to limit the fallout. In this post, we’ll run through a few handy tips which will make things easier to manage.

When Facing a Divorce, Practice Self-Care

There’s no way to avoid the difficulty of divorce entirely. It’s going to sting regardless. However, you do have some control over how sharp that sting is, and how long the pain lasts. By practicing self-care, you can ensure that you’re giving yourself the emotional, physical, and mental support you need to get back on your feet.

What self-care looks like in practice will vary from person to person. It’s mostly about doing the things that make you feel good and avoiding the things that will make your journey towards recovery more difficult. For example: engaging in exercising and getting plenty of rest, and avoiding alcohol.

Recruit Legal Help

There will be details that need to be ironed out during the divorce. Who gets the house? How will you split custody of the kids? What happens to the money in the joint bank account?

In an ideal world, these decisions would be sorted out amicably between the two people getting divorced. But this isn’t an ideal world. Even if the separation is amicable it’s best to look up the best divorce lawyers in your area and hire one who you trust to fight in your corner. After all, if your soon-to-be ex-partner hires a lawyer, then you’ll be in a highly vulnerable position when things go to court.

Find Strength in Community

Part of the challenge of going through a divorce is that it feels like you’re losing your tribe. Even if things weren’t going well, there’s comfort in knowing that you’re not alone. Missing this sense of connection can have people getting nostalgic for a time that was very far from perfect.

Instead of pining for your Ex, look at finding strength in your other connections. Your friends and family can help you through this difficult time. You can also look at expanding your circle of connections by volunteering to help others — that’ll allow you to meet new people while also having a positive impact on the world.

Look Forward

Finally, look at making fun and exciting plans for the future. It’s all too easy to begin looking backward and thinking of all the things that could have been, but that won’t get you anywhere. Instead, look at moving forward with positivity and confidence. One chapter of your life might be coming to an end, but a new one is about to begin — and you never know what it might bring.
