DGC 035 – Spend Some Time with Your Kids

March 22, 2020 | 21min

About this episode

Sometimes life forces us to slow down. And when it does, we have an opportunity to focus on what matters most: our children.

In this episode of the Daddy Got Custody podcast, Fred Campos reflects on the importance of spending meaningful time with our kids, particularly during the unprecedented changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With schools closing, families adjusting their schedules, and everyday routines being disrupted, parents faced new challenges. But these circumstances also created opportunities to reconnect, build relationships, and make lasting memories.

For fathers navigating divorce, custody arrangements, or co-parenting, being present in a child’s life is about much more than simply fulfilling a visitation schedule. It’s about creating experiences, having conversations, and showing children that they are loved and valued.

Making the Most of Your Time Together

Whether you have primary custody, shared custody, or limited parenting time, the moments you spend with your children matter.

Consider using that time to:

  • Be present. Put away distractions and give your children your attention.

  • Create memories. Play games, cook together, take walks, or enjoy simple activities at home.

  • Have meaningful conversations. Ask your children how they’re feeling and listen to their answers.

  • Build family traditions. Even small routines can become memories your children cherish.

  • Offer reassurance. During uncertain times, children need to know their parents are there for them.

  • Focus on relationships. Quality time doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate to be meaningful.

A Message for Divorced and Custodial Fathers

Custody isn’t just about court orders, schedules, or legal victories. It’s about the responsibility and privilege of raising our children.

The time we have with our kids is limited. Childhood passes quickly, and the opportunities we have today may not be available tomorrow.

Rather than focusing entirely on the inconveniences of disrupted routines, look for opportunities to strengthen your relationship with your children.

Sometimes the simplest moments become the most important ones.

Final Thoughts

As families navigate unexpected challenges, remember that being a good father doesn’t require a perfect plan.

It requires showing up, paying attention, and making your children a priority.

Spend this time with your kids. You’ll never regret the memories you make together.
