Team building is a central part of running a successful business, whether it’s remote or physical. However, planning a successful team-building event can feel overwhelming, especially when you have to keep on top of daily workloads. To make life easier, follow the steps outlined below.

Step 1 – Pick a Planning Team

Planning a team-building event on your own will be challenging, so bring in some additional people to delegate responsibilities. Not only will having a team free up some of your time, but you can also gain alternative perspectives on what type of event will work. If you’re unsure about who to include in your planning team, just send a friendly email asking who has the time, and who wants to help.

Step 2 – Team Building – Figure Out Your Goals

Your team-building event has to have a purpose to ensure the day is effective and fun. However, unless you’ve been given a goal by the powers that be, you may feel you’ve been left drifting without a paddle.

To get started with this seemingly enormous task, simply answer the following:

  • Who is it for and how many people will be there?
  • What is it going to be?
  • Where will it be held?
  • Why are you holding it?
  • When will it be?

Step 3 – Write a Guest List

You need to decide who’s going to attend. Sometimes this is as simple as “the sales team” and on others, it may not be so clear. If you’re struggling to write a guest list, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How many guests can the budget cope with?
  • Can anyone register interest or is it mandatory?
  • Will there be anyone with disabilities in attendance?

Step 4 – Team – Building – Set a Budget

There’s no point putting the particulars of the event together until you have a budget in mind. If you’ve been given the responsibility of planning the event, you need to ask your manager for the budget. However, if you are your own boss, you’ll have to do some financial analytics to find out what room you have in the budget.

Your budget should cover the following with extra for emergencies:

  • Venue hire, licenses, and permits
  • Parking and travel
  • Activity suppliers
  • Food and beverages
  • Credit card fees
  • Insurance

Step 5 – Venue and Logistics

The venue is essential to the success of the day because a wrong choice could ruin everything. Ideally, the venue needs to be close to most employees and large enough to accommodate your event.
