Best Upgrades to Make a New Home Livable
Moving into a new house comes with a lot of change and uncertainty, but it also comes with a fresh start. Whether you’ve moved home due to a separation or divorce, or you’re relocating for work, getting your new home in a livable condition from the beginning matters a lot and will help you adjust faster, knowing your home is safe and working properly.
So what do you need to focus on? What are the best upgrades to make a new home livable?
Address Any Plumbing Issues
Not all plumbing issues are visible immediately, and when it’s concerning pipes behind a wall or under flooring, it might be a case of them revealing themselves a few months down the line.
Make some checks: look for slow-draining water in sinks or the bath and shower, check water pressure and look for signs that might indicate a leak you can’t see just yet.
It can also be a good idea to get a plumber to check pipes and spot anything you might not know to look for so you can get issues resolved before you move in or before they become bigger concerns down the line. This is a good idea if you’re moving into an older property.
Install New Locks and a Security System
Previous owners, tenants, or even old keys given to friends and family mean you can never really know for sure who has keys to your property and can just let themselves into your new home.
Rekeying or fully replacing all locks on windows and doors is one of the best decisions you can make when moving into a new place. It gives you added peace of mind that no one else can gain access without your consent and instantly improves security.
Then extend this to the garage, gates, and other entrances or exits to the property that you might have overlooked. From here you can add security systems like video doorbells or full CCTV systems to the property for additional security to protect your new home.
Repaint Walls
Even if you just paint walls white to begin with, a fresh coat of paint can really work wonders. That’s not to say you need to use this to cover any issues or imperfections. If these exist, like damp spots or stains and odors, get these checked first and clean all walls prior to painting them, but in the first instance, giving everything a lick of paint to revive walls, cabinets, fences, etc, can be a great idea.
Get Electrics Checked
Faulty wiring isn’t always obvious, and older homes especially can have outdated electrical systems that weren’t built to handle the number of devices a modern household actually uses. And this can put massive strain on the systems as a whole. Get an electrician to check the fuse box, outlets, and any visible wiring before moving in. This will help you catch any safety issues early rather than discovering the hard way once you trip a circuit or worse, an electrical fire breaks out. Before you move in is the perfect time to carry out these checks before you start making changes or moving in and discovering, after the fact, that things aren’t working as they should be.
