25 Things Every Father Should Start Documenting Today

The Best Memory Doesn’t Win in Court

One of the biggest mistakes fathers make is assuming they’ll remember everything when it’s time to testify.

You won’t.

Custody cases often take months—or even years—to resolve.

By then, the details blur together.

Dates get confused.

Conversations are forgotten.

That’s why experienced attorneys love documentation.

Not because it’s exciting.

Because it’s believable.

Why Documentation Matters

After helping fathers through custody cases for more than 27 years, I’ve seen one pattern over and over again.

The father with organized, consistent records often has a tremendous advantage.

Documentation doesn’t create the truth.

It helps prove it.

1. Parenting Time

Record:

  • Every pickup
  • Every drop-off
  • Schedule changes
  • Missed visitations
  • Late exchanges

Consistency tells a story.

2. School Activities

Keep records of:

  • Parent-teacher conferences
  • School programs
  • Open houses
  • Report cards
  • Awards
  • Attendance

Show your involvement.

3. Medical Appointments

Document:

  • Doctor visits
  • Dental appointments
  • Prescriptions
  • Vaccinations
  • Emergency room visits
  • Therapy sessions

Health matters.

4. Communication With the Other Parent

Save:

  • Text messages
  • Emails
  • Parenting app messages
  • Voicemails (when legally permissible)
  • Important letters

Never alter or delete conversations.

5. Expenses

Track money spent on your children, including:

  • Clothing
  • School supplies
  • Medical expenses
  • Sports
  • Activities
  • Childcare
  • Transportation

Keep receipts whenever possible.

6. Photos

Photos can demonstrate:

  • Vacations
  • Birthday parties
  • Homework time
  • Sporting events
  • Family dinners
  • Everyday parenting

Don’t rely only on posed pictures.

Real life matters.

7. Calendar Entries

Use a digital or paper calendar to record:

  • Parenting time
  • Appointments
  • School events
  • Activities
  • Important conversations
  • Court dates

Consistency is more important than perfection.

8. Behavioral Concerns

If issues arise, document facts—not emotions.

Instead of writing:

“She was being impossible again.”

Write:

“July 12, 2026 – Exchange scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Child was not available until 6:45 p.m. No advance notice was provided.”

Facts carry more weight than opinions.

9. Witnesses

Keep a list of people who have observed your parenting.

Examples include:

  • Teachers
  • Coaches
  • Neighbors
  • Family friends
  • Childcare providers

You may never need them.

But you’ll be glad you have the information if you do.

10. Court Documents

Organize everything.

Keep copies of:

  • Court orders
  • Motions
  • Financial records
  • Evaluations
  • Emails from your attorney
  • Discovery responses

A three-ring binder—or a well-organized digital folder—can save countless hours.

11–25: Other Things Worth Documenting

Don’t overlook these important details:

  1. Phone calls with your child
  2. Video chats
  3. Homework assistance
  4. Extracurricular events attended
  5. Volunteer activities at school
  6. Holiday parenting time
  7. Summer schedules
  8. Transportation provided
  9. Babysitters used
  10. Discipline issues and how you handled them
  11. Child’s achievements and milestones
  12. Missed communications from the other parent
  13. Positive co-parenting efforts you made
  14. Changes in the child’s routine or behavior
  15. Any significant event affecting your child’s well-being

Keep a Parenting Journal

One of the best habits you can develop is maintaining a simple parenting journal.

It doesn’t need to be fancy.

A notebook, spreadsheet, or digital app works just fine.

The important thing is to write things down while they’re fresh.

Five minutes a day today can save hours of frustration months from now.

Don’t Turn It Into a Complaint Log

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.

Some fathers only write down negative things about the other parent.

That’s a mistake.

Your journal should reflect your parenting—not just their shortcomings.

Document the moments you spend helping your child grow, learn, and succeed.

That paints a much more complete picture.

Your Attorney Will Thank You

When your attorney asks:

“Do you remember when…”

Imagine being able to respond:

“Yes. It was March 14. Here’s my journal entry, the text message, and a photo from that day.”

That’s incredibly valuable.

Good documentation helps your attorney prepare, negotiate, and, if necessary, present a stronger case in court.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to document every minute of every day.

But you do need to develop the habit of recording the important moments.

Courts don’t decide cases based on who has the best memory.

They decide cases based on credible evidence.

The sooner you start documenting, the more prepared you’ll be if questions arise months—or even years—from now.

One final suggestion.

Create a simple daily log with these headings:

  • Date
  • Parenting Time
  • Activities
  • School
  • Medical
  • Communication
  • Expenses
  • Notes

You don’t need to write a novel.

A few accurate sentences each day can become one of the most valuable tools in your custody case.
